Where to escape to? How to avoid what we fear? Better head for another religion if you want escape or avoidance. Or comfortableness for that matter.

But there is some help. Jesus said he wasn’t going to abandon his disciple like orphans. He did say he was leaving them in a hostile world. He also told then he was leaving them with an unfinished job. He didn’t give the impression that he was leaving them in some kind of safe house, or walled enclave were they would be safe. On the contrary, he said that they would be in danger most of the time.

But he said he would be with them. That power from God in the person of the Holy Spirit would be with them. That they would be a united group, gathered around and in him.  And that they would be his personal emissaries. With his personal message for the world. One of his last statements was, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16.33). Take heart.
