The person should speak to God and turn the ideas above into statements and requests addressed to God. People can use their own words, but here is an example of such a prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ,

I have turned away from you. I have ignored you and done things that are wrong. (Take a few moments to mention anything particular that is on your conscience).

Please forgive me. I turn from everything which is wrong. I give up my rebellion. I turn to you and submit my life to you.

Thank you that you died on the cross for me so that I could be forgiven and set free.

Thank you that you offer me this gift of forgiveness and your Holy Spirit. I receive that gift.

Please come into my life by your Holy Spirit to be with me forever, and to direct my life.

Thank you, Lord Jesus. Amen

God takes them at their word when they pray like this. They can trust the promise of God, the gospel. God’s Holy Spirit takes up residence on their life as the ultimate assurance that they belong to him.  Now they can start being a learner, a follower and a child of the Father who loves them.
