Born spiritually that is. When they put their trust in Christ. When they trust their life to him. When they decide to submit their life to him. When they ask for his life to be in them. When they start what is really a newly created life that depends on Christ being in them.

What happens then? The idea is that they then start growing as children of God. But this can be confusing for adults who are already grown up, and who have already finished their education. It is even harder for adults who have had a lot of experience of religion and church life. It is easy to confuse knowledge of how a Christian institution works with knowledge of God.

That is what a child learns first. They learn who supplies their food and they build relationships with those people. The Christian life is no different in this regard. The growth of a Christian person depends on being fed with the food that comes from God, and deepening our relationship with him.

Although God is our Father, he has placed in his family and given us many others to nurture us. The nurture that Christians need comes from his Word, by way of his Spirit filled people who teach, encourage, instruct, guide and model the word of God. In fact it becomes a mutual nurturing. All of us have a share in it.

All of us are part of the kitchen team that brings the food to the family. The food of his word that is.
