I suppose the New Testament and the history of the church would give us some clues. But it depends on whether we are giving advice to people in a different context to us, or whether we are trying to  work it out for ourselves.

But surely this is not our problem? But it is our problem. Just seeing that there is a problem is a problem in itself. It involves first of all having some sense of what culture and religion we are enmeshed in. Many of us would say we have been brought up in a Christian country and culture. But this is increasingly unlikely.

Our country and culture is far from Christian. Its foundations seem to be in materialism, with values that are increasingly human centred. That is, self-centred.  That is, we humans are the ones who decide what is right and wrong.  Popular opinion rules. The residual biblical moral basis of our society continues to be eroded in favour of pleasure seeking, doing whatever we want to do, rudeness and violence.

It is possible to be a “secret believer” within that culture. As pressure increases on the church to conform to the values of this culture, disciples will have to decide whether they really want to be converted out of the culture.
